Panzanella (this is the perfect recipe for stale bread & fresh tomatoes)
Chop or tear a loaf of crusty stale Italian or French or Pita bread. Best not use hippie bread. Could be interesting with a dense German/Danish style, though
If it isn't quite stale, toss in in a low over for a half hour to dry it out
Pour and toss with good quality olive oil
Whilst the bread is soaking up the oil, roughly chop fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, parsley and garlic- add to the bread, with a big spoonful of capers, some fresh oregano and a generous squeeze of lemon juice
Season with S & P and you are good to go
Add feta for fun
You can also make a nice extra dressing with dijon, olive oil, lemon juice and preserved lemons- whisk together and drizzle on top
Eat within a few hours

Roasted Potatoes with aioli
Clean and chop potatoes lightly
Toss with olive oil, salt, herbs & bake at 425 for about 45 min to an hour, tossing occasionally

Meanwhile, make aioli:
Blend in a mixer 1 room temp egg, a dollop of dijon, a squeeze of lemon, a clove of garlic, salt and a quarter cup of olive oil. Start whirling and add 3/4 cup olive oil in a slow stream until thick. Then add your flavor of choice: in this case I made 2 batches: 1 with fennel fronds and the other with Spanish smoked paprika

Salad with Miso-Tahini Dressing
Blend a dollop of miso, a dollop of tahini, a dollop of dijon, a squeeze of agave syrup, 1 part lemon juice, 3 parts olive oil, and S & P

Crab & Asparagus Quiche (or just asparagus)
Blanch asparagus tips- the tip is the part that breaks off easily, then put in an ice bath to retain color
Make dough:
1 stick of frozen butter grated into 1-1/2 cups white flour, mixed with pastry blender or two butter knives, until it resembles peas. Add ice water w/ a dash of vinegar and stir lightly with fork until it sticks together. Roll dough on floured surface, and don't touch it too much- keep it cool baby- then lay it in a pie pan
Make custard:
2-3 eggs/1 cup cream or milk or half n half/1 cup grated cheddar/S& P
Add asparagus or 1/2 cup crabmeat or both
Pour into pan lined with uncooked crust
Bake at 375 for about 30-40 minutes, or until clean when poked with a chopstick

Make it Gluten Free by eliminating crust, and pouring custard into cupcake pan with paper liners. These bake fast and are tender little yumyum bites

Institutional critique from the inside out, but not obviously "critical"

CousCous Pilaf with Two Sauces

Coat a cup of couscous with a little olive oil, using your fingers

Add salt & pepper, and any other spice you might want, plus a tablespoon or so of dried currants

Pour a cup of boiling water or stock on top and cover

Meanwhile, make sauces

Tahini sauce:

Puree a dollop of tahini, a Tbsp. mustard, juice from 1-2 lemons, a garlic clove, an inch of ginger, S & P

Voila!

Peanut Sauce:

Mix a half cup of peanut butter, a dash of soy sauce, a Tbsp brown sugar, juice of 1-2 limes, a squish of chili sauce, and a 1/4 cup hot water

Voila!

By now your couscous is done- fluff with a fork, add some toasted nuts and a cup of spinach or other green. Mix and serve with sauce(s) on top, and cilantro or parsley for garnish

One-Minute Mayo

In a food processor, blend one room temperature egg, a tsp mustard, a garlic clove, a squeeze of lemon juice, S & P, plus 1/4 c olive oil

Whilst blending, drizzle about 3/4 cup olive oil, or until thickened- you'll hear the machine change its tone

Cream of Asparagus Soup
Take the tough ends off a few bunches of asparagus, and toss them in a stock pot with a chopped onion (skins & all), leeks if you have them, some garlic, a lot of celery and a few carrots, tops removed & a bay leaf or two
Sautee in olive oil til sweating, then add water to near top of pot- let boil, turn down heat, and simmer for an hour, scraping off foam occasionally
Drain & reserve stock
Meanwhile, peel and chop an onion, a few garlic cloves, leeks, and sautee in butter or olive oil
Add a few stalks of chopped celery, a couple of peeled, chopped potatoes
When it is ready, add the stock & simmer until potatoes are tender
Cut very tips off of asparagus and steam for 1 minute (you can steam over soup if you wish), then drain & cover with ice bath to preserve fresh green color
Add asparagus tops, chopped roughly, the zest of one lemon, and simmer until tender, adjusting S & P
Puree with a blending wand or food mill, leaving it with a little texture or not- as you like
Add a cup of heavy cream and simmer for a few minutes more- don't let it boil over
Serve with a few green tips for garnish

Tabbouleh Lettuce Cups
Toss bulgur with a generous drop of olive oil, plus S & P, until every grain is covered
Cover bulgur with equal amount of boiled water and cover if you are in a hurry, or leave open if not
Chop a whole lot of parsley- like a bunch or two for every cup of bulgur-with 1 clove of garlic
Chop roasted peppers
Make sure bulgur has absorbed all liquid- if not, drain well
Add parsley-garlic mix, roasted pepper, the juice of a few lemons and a generous pour of olive oil
Adjust S & P, and serve on Romaine hearts

Jamaican Picadillo
Soak black eyed peas overnight. Drain and cook in fresh water until soft, about 45 minutes
Cook brown rice or barley in a rice cooker (2:1 water/rice ratio); fluff with a fork
Sautee 1 chopped onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 Tbsp ginger, and some whole dried chilis in olive or vegetable oil
Cook until soft, then add 2 tsp curry powder, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp thyme, 1/2 tsp cayenne & 1-2 cans of diced tomatoes (depending on how wet you like it), plus salt, pepper and a dash of agave syrup, sugar or other sweetener to level the acidity
Stir in cooked black eyed peas, 1/4 cup currants, 1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds and simmer, stirring, until flavors meld
Stir in rice/barley & serve

A meal in (almost) one pot!

Sister Corita Kent was a nun, artist and activist. She eventually left the church, but remains welcome by both Catholics and atheists alike for her groundbreaking art education. Thanks to Swinehart for bringing her to my attention. Her show runs at U of P until March 10th.

Interestingly, I have asked my students to do this same exercise, which was requested of me by Viola Frey:

--SENSE DIARIES:  Corita urged her students to keep a record of everything that sparked their interest - words, poems, quotations, lyrics, signs, slogans, music, composers, films, books, images drawn or collected from magazines, photographs, descriptions of things or experiences, tastes and smells, encyclopedia entries, and newspaper headlines. She had her students keep everything in their Sense Diaries, a special notebooks they made, for future reference.

Reading Slanted and Enchanted, The Evolution of Indie Culture by my old pal Kaya Oakes, gave me insight into the deconstruction of musical hierarchy through punk. I was listening to it, relating to it, relishing in it., but I had never before related the politics to the sound.
Interviewing Mike Watt of the Minutemen, Dos, and many other projects, she uncovered a conscious subverting of musical hierarchy through song structure, not just DIY ethics and antics.
"The arena rock was kind of hierarchical with guitars and singers being way at the top and the other section way down there" says Watt. "Obviously, with the punk movement, everybody's lame, so it's kind of equal footing. So all that hierarchy got thrown out." What is more interesting, though, argues Oakes, is that this equal footing is what gave the Minutemen their unique sound by ridding themselves of the "aristocracy of the guitar."
I've always described the sound as 'sideways'... now it is clear why.

White Bean Stew
Soak white beans (navy, etc) overnight in plenty of water; drain
Cook beans in fresh water until tender, about 1 hour; drain
Roast a head of garlic wrapped in foil, in a 400 degree oven for 1/2 hour
Meanwhile, sauté a mirepoix of chopped onions, carrots and celery until soft and releasing juices
Add cooked beans, water or stock, soy sauce, molasses, S & P, plus an end of a hard cheese
Add chopped fresh sage, parsley, basil and the roasted garlic
Puree half the soup in a food processor of food mill
Add chopped roasted peppers

Rice Noodle Salad
Soak fine rice vermicelli in hot water, covered, until tender - do not cook
Add grated carrot, cabbage, chopped celery, cucumber, and plenty of minced cilantro, mint and basil
Combine and top with peanut dressing
Dressing
Blend olive oil, sesame oil, lemon juice, peanuts or peanut butter and sugar, adjusting seasoning as needed

Lasagna
Make a large amount of thin tomato sauce: Sautee onions and garlic til soft, and, since it is winter, add canned tomatoes along with fresh basil and parsley, S & P and a dash of sugar and red chili flakes
Sautee sliced mushrooms and chopped kale til juicy. Season with S & P
Make béchamel: melt equal parts butter/flour, about 2 tablespoons of each, until the thickness of gravy and bubbling. Add cold milk and bring just back to a boil while stirring, until thickened. Add S & P and a grinding of nutmeg
If you are normal, you would remember to buy ricotta and season it with fresh herbs. I made this one without cheese.
Using no pre-cook lasagna noodles (they are thin and yellow), layer sauce, noodles, béchamel, filling, sauce, and layer again. The final layer should be noodles with plenty of sauce
Bake, covered, until soft, about 25 minutes

Green Salad with Tahini-Balsamic Dressing
Blend Balsamic vinegar , dijon mustard, tahini, grated ginger, a shallot, the juice of one lemon and olive oil, keeping the balance approximately 3 parts oil to one part acid

French Cake
from The Attic Cookbook
Use room temperature ingredients
Preheat oven to 350
Cream 3/4 cup unsalted butter
Add 1-1/2 cups sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy
Add 3 eggs and beat well
Sift together 3 cups of cake flour, 1 Tbs baking powder, 1/4 Tsp salt
Combine 1 cup milk with 1 Tsp rose water
Add flour mixture and milk alternately to butter, beginning and ending with the flour
Bake in cupcake tins or a floured, buttered cake pan til done and tested dry in the center
Cool completely
Frosting
Beat 2 egg whites til stiff peaks form, and gradually add 2 cups of powdered sugar
Add the zest of one lemon, finely chopped, and a Tsp of rose water
Frost cooled cakes and decorate with rose petals, lemon zest and mint leaves

Yellow Dahl, Rice Fritters, Onion Chutney
Fritters:
Cook white rice, 1:1-1/4 rice/water ratio, and fluff lightly when done
When cool, form balls with an ice cream scoop and your hands, using cold water to prevent sticking
When balls are formed, poke each with a chopstick, and fill with a thin chutney or sauce, or not
Roll balls in chickpea flour, or in eggs and breadcrumbs, and fry in hot oil til lightly browned
Drain on brown paper bags away from the flame
Chutney:
Sautee chopped onions, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, S & P until onions are tender
Add a 1/4 cup sugar, a large heap of tamarind paste, and a generous splash of simple vinegar, like apple cider, cooking til bubbly
Remove from heat and puree half, then mix back together
Dahl:
Soak yellow split peas and garbanzo beans overnight in plenty of water
Drain and simmer in fresh water for about an hour, with dashes turmeric, cinnamon, coriander, cloves, and cumin- you could use commercial curry powder if that's all you have
In a low pan, heat olive oil and cook a teaspoon each of mustard seeds and fenugreek til seeds pop. Add and sautee finely chopped onions, garlic, celery, carrots and ginger until onions are translucent
Puree beans in cooking water, removing some water if wanting a thicker dish
Add sauteed vegetables, cook for another half hour -hour on low

Serve Dahl in a bowl with a fritter on top and a generous dollop of chutney

Pumpkin Soup with Spaghetti Squash and Spiced Whipped Cream
Toss a Pumpkin and a Spaghetti Squash in the oven at 400 for about 45 minutes
Remove, let cool
Peel, de-seed (save seeds for roasting?) and roughly chop the pumpkin
Chop onions, carrots, garlic, ginger (lots) and celery, if you have some, saving all the trimmings for homemade stock:
Sautee trimmings, including those from the pumpkin, plus a few hunks of vegetables, soy sauce and S & P to make stock- add water and simmer for an hour or so
Sautee all vegetables slowly in olive oil until onions are transparent
Add a big heap of Thai curry paste, a tablespoon of sugar, S & P
Stir around, and add drained stock (you could easily add coconut milk, fish sauce and peanut butter to richen the flavor, if you wish)
Adjust seasonings, remove from heat, and puree

Cut open Spaghetti Squash lengthwise and gently pull fibers with a fork. Place a small mound in each bowl, covering with a ladleful of soup

Whip heavy cream with an electric mixer or your hand if you are crazy and strong. Add a dash of cinnamon, cardamom and coriander. Garnish the soup with a dollop of cream and some cilantro if you have it.

Today I used "lexa's time" to get some help and inspiration to write music for this commission of sorts mentioned below. What happens when you give a bunch of "non-musicians" some "instruments" and words?
Well, they make music. Really good music, Music I didn't know could be made. Music with phones. Music with canes. Music with glasses of water. Music with paper towel rolls. Music with toys (yeah, I brought those but hardly anyone needed them).
Now we enter the great world of Multiple Authorship.
I wonder if anyone wants to continue this collaboration?

Recipes forJanuary 10th with Roger Peet

Pumpkin Chili with Roasted Pepper-Cilantro Cream
Soak Kidney beans overnight. Drain and cook with plenty of water until tender- about an hour+. Do not salt until cooked. Drain again.
Peel and chop a small pumpkin or other winter squash into cubes, roasting with a little olive oil and S & P in a very hot oven
In that oven, toss in 2 heads of garlic that have their tops chopped off and are wrapped in foil. Take both out in 20 minutes.

Make Chili Paste:

Toast a tablespoon or so each of cumin seeds & oregano

Add same amounts of cinnamon, cocoa, spanish paprika and remove from heat

Soften a variety of dried chilis: Ancho, New Mexico, California, Chipotle, etc. by soaking in boiled water, covered, for 5 minutes

Blend with the spices and few cloves of garlic, adding soaking liquid if necessary.

If using meat, brown in cooking pot before following the next instructions

In a large heavy-bottomed pot, sautee 2 chopped onions in olive oil & salt until translucent
Add beans and a large can of whole tomatoes, or fresh blanched, de-skinned ones if it is the season
plus the pumpkin, a big heaping scoop of chili paste, the squeezed, roasted garlic, S & P, stir, and let simmer, uncovered

Roast many green or anaheim peppers in a very hot oven on on a grill until skin is blistered/blackened
If roasting in the oven, use a pan on the rack underneath so they can drip- they will
Peel off whatever skin will easily come off, and tough tops/seeds- then puree with a dash of salt & a splash of lemon juice. Reserve half while putting the other half in the chili.

With the reserved half, blend with the second head of roasted garlic, a big handful of fresh cilantro, a teaspoon of chili paste, a dash of sugar, S & P and a cup of thick yogurt

Adjust seasoning on chili: S & P, a dash of sugar, more chili paste, cocoa, etc.
Serve with a dollop of Roasted Pepper-Cilantro Cream

Yikes. I have no idea what I cooked for the last two meals. Rushing off for tour at the end of last term with Kačkala changed my focus... Meanwhile some interesting opportunities abound:

I have been invited to compose music for Erik Ehn's "michiyuki" (Noh traveling songs). I collaborated with Erik, Suki O'Kane, and many other Bay Area musicians and actors in 2008 for Theatre of Yugen's Cycle Plays.
In Noh plays, there is a moment when the chorus chants the Michiyuki, or “travel song” describing the character’s travels. The vocals often include the place name and description of the setting as well as the events of the journey. In kyōgen, journeys and excursions are known as Michiyuki, with the performers usually reciting lines while circling the stage. After the Michiyuki, a line is included to indicate the character’s arrival at their destination, which is known as the tsuki-zerifu, or “arrival line.”
This should be a remarkable experience.

Some of us in SoPrac are collaborating on a public art/design project with the Center for Sustainable Solutions, which is both interesting and providing new challenges, serving a specific public, under specific guidelines. We are creating a multi-use space that is slightly utopian, very user friendly, and as green as we can go (which is not so easy, btw).

The Library is Open!
The library/resource center is officially set up again, and open: Wednesdays from 2-5, or by appointment. The library is located in the back room of Field Work. We have a ton of new show cards/artist info from recent visits to New York and San Francisco, as well as new book titles and updated periodicals. Come visit, research, work and have some tea.

Field Work
We are meeting this week to curate the next months of exciting events & projects. We received over 20 proposals, so I look forward to the space being truly active.

Recipes for November 1st with Chris Johanson

Winter Vegetable Masala

Sautee whole spices in olive oil:

black cardamon, cinnamon stick, cloves, cumin seeds, peppercorns

Add a cup+ pureed onion/garlic/ginger and add ground spices:

coriander, tumeric, chili, salt

Sautee until oil separates

Add a can of chopped tomatoes (or about equal amount of tomatoes as onion paste)

Sautee some more so flavors blend. Add tamarind paste or a lil sugar if it needs sweetness

Add vegetables: chopped, peeled kabocha squash, rutabagas & carrots (or any you like)

Cook until vegetables are tender, sauce has thickened and flavors are melded. Adjust S & P, sweetness, and chili.

Curried Mashed Potatoes

Boil peeled or unpeeled potatoes til tender

Sautee cumin seeds and mustard seeds in oil or butter

Mash potatoes with coconut milk, butter, salt & pepper, spices in oil, curry powder

Yello Dahl

Soak yellow split peas overnight if you can

Change water and boil for about an hour or until soft

Drain most of the cooking liquid

Add some onion/garlic/ginger puree

plus ground green cardamon & coriander, or curry powder if that's what you have

S & P & chili (optional)

Cook 15 min. more & process with a mixer for a smoother consistency, if you wish.

Yogurt Raita

Grate or finely chop cucumbers, carrots, green peppers, whatever crunchy raw vegetables you have on hand

Mix with yogurt, S & P, a bunch of chopped mint, a few dashes of cumin, and a little sugar

Green Tomato Chutney

Boil 3 tbsp cider vinegar and 3 tbsp sugar

Add chopped green tomato, chili flakes, fresh ginger and a few cumin seeds.

Simmer for 20 minutes and if inclined, put in sterilized jars or just keep in the fridge for a week or two.

Lentil Soup
This could be constructed a million ways, but here's a really simple version
Saute 3 onions, a half head of garlic, some shallots, and a bunch of peeled, chopped carrots (& celery, if you have some) with S & P and red chili flakes til onions are translucent and sweating
Add a few cups of green lentils, stir, and add water or stock to fill the pot (how many cups depends on how thick you like it- I like a thinner soup)
Season water, if using, with soy sauce, molasses and tomato paste, plus more S & P if necessary
You can always add a heel of hard cheese to extract a sweet, nutty, salty flavor
Cook on medium til lentils are just tender, not mushy

Kale, Chanterelles and Carrots
How lucky to get chanterelles!
Peel and julienne carrots
Steam carrots for a few minutes in a covered pot with a bit of water and dash of salt
Finely chop a whole head of garlic
Carefully clean mushrooms with a towel, and chop roughly
Clean and chop kale, including most of the stem
Saute garlic in olive oil, add mushrooms and cook til mushroom extract a lot of juice and brown slightly
Drain mushrooms, put aside, and reserve liquid
Steam kale in the same pan with a lid, the liquid from cleaning will act as a steaming agent
Combine kale, mushrooms and carrots with a little S & P
Use mushroom liquid in soup, make a sauce with a little roux, or drink it up!

CousCous with Dijon-Tahini Dressing
Here's another thing you could make in a variety of ways. Today's version:
Toss measured couscous with olive oil, salt, ras el hanout (a moroccan spice), and currants until each grain is separated
Add the equal amount of boiled water and cover
Fluff with a fork and Serve with a bit of dressing on top

Dijon-Tahini Dressing
Mix or blend a heap of dijon mustard, a heap of tahini, a shallot, S & P, 1 part cider vinegar and 3 parts olive oil til combined. Adjust flavors if necessary

We’ll be using the Field Work space as a workshop: researching, gathering and sharing recipes, photos, our first cookbooks, cooking and gardening tips, plus there will be visits from local chefs and gardeners. Field Work is a new project space started by PSU MFA and Graphic Design students and faculty. Field Work is located at the corner of SW 11th & Jefferson in Portland.

Assisting Steve Beatty has been great, as he has allowed me a lot of freedom and respect to co-teach with him. We both think similarly about traditions and rules (no thanks!) and want the students to have a lot of fun working on projects that explore contemporary issues while learning the basics of 3D.
My first project was based on Irwin Wurm's one-minute sculpture, turned into three-minute sculptures- a project to explore collaboration and immediacy

Massuman Curry

Sauté lots of chopped onions, garlic, ginger and galangal in vegetable oil til onions are tender

Add a heap of massuman curry paste and some more oil, if necessary. Some curry pastes are really freaking hot, so know what you are dealing with

If not veg, now is a good time to add some squirts of fish sauce and some brown sugar

Add chopped potatoes and carrots

Stir around in the oil, then add a few cans of coconut milk. It’s fattening- get over it

You can supplement some lemongrass stock or vegetable stock if you are on a diet

When simmering, add a big scoop of peanut butter, S & P to taste

When potatoes are soft, add other vegetables, like summer squash and peppers

Cook til just tender, and add a big handful of fresh basil leaves before serving

Rice Salad

Cook sushi rice 1:1-1/4 rice:water ratio

Use a rice cooker if you have one- it really does perfectly cook rice. Otherwise, bring rice and water to a boil, cover and lower heat dramatically. Cook til no more steam appears. Do not let steam out!

When cool enough to touch, lay out rice on a pan and add chopped celery, shallots, ginger, grated carrots and dried currants- mix with hands, trying to separate grains. Add a splash of seasoned rice vinegar, mirin, and oil (try flavored oils if inclined)

Add chopped cilantro and basil or any other fresh herb you’d like, toss, and eat

Beets, Greens & Apples

Fresh beet greens are so wonderful, both earthy and tart

Roast beets in foil, clean greens well and chop

Chop crisp apples and dress with lemon juice

When done and cool, peel and chop beet roots

Toss together and eat with or without dressing

Shine A Light, Recording Session

Sean Flora's studio is filled with fun! He's a great engineer- I highly recommend

Being flexible to the needs and time constraints of the staff, we ended up recording a lot of the songs for them, though the staff was very involved in writing the words, some of the melodies, and directing the accompanying videos. It was interesting to be working on two simultaneous collaborations, one with the staff, and one with the musicians: Sean, Garth, Jessica and Dan

Shine A Light

I collaborated with various staff members of the Portland Art Museum to write, record and perform jingles about their respective jobs. We made snappy work songs with the staff, offering a voice to the often behind the scenes workers that make the museum function. The songs got even snappier when I collaborated with some fellow musicians. Music videos were projected throughout the evening in the passageway connecting the two buildings, and live performances took place throughout the night.

Somehow two of our band members were missing for this performance...

October 11^th, with Mel Chin

Mushroom Barley Soup

Cook barley like you would brown rice- 1 part barley to 2 parts water. Bring to a boil, lower heat, cover and simmer til plump. Set aside

Pour boiling water over dried mushrooms (1 part mushrooms to 5 parts water) and cover for 10 minutes until mushrooms are soft. Squeeze out liquid and chop mushrooms. This liquid will be your stock, or you can use other stock or water

Sautee chopped onions, garlic and plenty of thinly sliced fresh mushrooms, along with the chopped reconstituted mushrooms. There could be some carrots and celery in there too, if you wish. Simmer until lots of juicy mushroom liquid has formed, but not long enough for it to have evaporated.

Add a genrous splash of sherry or vermouth and cook for a minute

Add your stock, some soy sauce, S & P, fresh thyme, a dash of molasses, and bring to a boil, making sure the flavors are intense and that there is plenty of liquid

Add the barley, lower heat, and cook for just 10 minutes or until flavors have melded, but barley has not expanded, which it has a way of doing

Summer Lasagna

I use the lasagna noodles that needn’t be cooked first

Roast peppers: toss in a really hot oven or grill until blackened. Remove from heat, place in a paper bag or bowl, cover and steam. When cool, remove skins, stems and seeds without using water

Sautee chopped onions and garlic til tender

Add thinly sliced summer squash, chopped roasted peppers, S & P and red chili flakes

Make sauce (summer or winter tomato sauce, depending on what’s available), and make it wet

Layer roasting pan with sauce, lasagna sheets, more sauce, grated cheese (parmesan, mozzarella, … whatever you like), filling, and so on, until you have at least three layers

Bake in a preheated 400 oven for 20-30 minutes

Best to make enough sauce for ladling on top

Garnish with fresh parsley or basil

Roasted Tomato, Pepper and Squash Soup

Thanks to Jen and Daniel for their plethora of gorgeous tomatoes!

Toss a roasting pan full of any tomatoes you have growing with olive oli, salt & pepper.. if they are really big, cut them in half. Add a head of garlic with the top cut off

Roast at 375 for about 45 min-an hour or until shriveled and juicy

If you can fit it in your oven, roast some whole peppers and a whole acorn squash at the same time. When done, peel and chop them

Sautee a large, chopped onion til tender in a large soup pot

Add tomatoes and their juices, and squeeze the roasted garlic in

Add a pinch of sugar and simmer until it starts to reduce

Add the roasted peppers and squash, stock or water to cover, chopped basil and parsley, a few bay leaves, a dash of red chili flakes, and simmer for about 30 minutes, or more if you want to let the flavors meld… depends on how hungry you are

Blend, or not, (if you do, don’t forget to remove the bay leaves) and serve with a dollop of something creamy, like roasted pepper cream or aioli or herbed yogurt..

Summer Loving & School Daze

Yay. School has started. I'm not being facetious. After returning from the Condensations of the Social collaboration in NY, which was tricky but in the end successful, I spent my summer with plenty of projects floating around in my head and starting to get activated, but somehow the lack of time structure mixed with trying to find a job, failing, and the guilt of being a housewife left me less productive than I would have liked, and now it is coming to bite me in the rear... Wow, that is a run on sentence.

Some things to check out are the new Your Garden Cookbook blog, which is up and running. Nicole and I have started two cookbooks and are slowly finding solutions to many questions that have come up for us. Aesthetic choices, printing, format, purity of concept, web vs. object, etc. I can tell you writing a cookbook is not as easy as I thought. I did intern for two different professional cookbooks, as a food stager and a chef- both great experiences. Don't forget we have a show at Field Work in late October, where we'll give cooking lessons, share recipes, and more. We welcome contributions, feedback and participation.

Oh yeah, the Monday Night Cookbook. I promise to never design anything in Microsoft Word agin. I swear. Coming... better late than never.

Speaking of cookbooks, they will be in Stephanie Syjuco's Shadowshop at SF Moma in the late fall through spring. We are figuring out a way to make recipe cards that can be chosen individually to make your own cookbook.

Bohemian Omnimedia is, after failing to find work, my solution to be employed in Portland. Unfortunately I didn't really finish it until the summer's end, when I had no time to actually implement the plan. I am prepared for next time, however. It is half conceptual art project, half reality check business proposition. Maybe some parts of it are more of one than the other... . Surely we'll discuss it. Meanwhile, I am accepting participating artists to join me in messing with the art world system to make pretty, decorative, affordable art under the name Fäkart.

Jen, Pat, Kate, Nicole, Josh, Justin Flood ( Graphic Design student extraordinaire) & I started busting butt on the 11th & Jefferson PDC space formerly known at the Mandrake Museum / Hotel Mandragoria. temporarily called SuperGeneric (sigh), now Field Work, we have created a modern, flexible space for classes, workshops, events, projects, exhibitions and a home for the library. There is still a lot of work to do but we will have an open call for projects in the late fall.

Another work in progress is my jingle writing with the staff of Portland Art Museum for Shine A Light. It took a while to break them in, but now I have a number of departments ready, willing and able to participate. I shall say no more as it is coming soon to a museum near you.

One of the aspects of Hambidge that Fellows repeatedly praise is the fact that each resident is housed in his/her own, stand-alone, studio which contains a work area as well as sleeping area, kitchen and bath. Among them are three studios which are our primary visual arts studios, one of which contains a rebuilt, 1925 Steinway Grand Piano and is used for music Fellows as well. The other studios are primarily for disciplines which require less space. Each has its own charm and character and some contain fireplaces. We also have a state of the art Pottery Studio and an Anagama Wood Fired Kiln which are available for the Fellows use. The accommodations are intentionally simple and the kitchens outfitted for basic cooking. Linens, quilts, comforters and other necessary items are provided. All studios are heated. At this time, computer access is limited to the common building, Lucinda's Rock House, where we have wireless access as well as a computer station.

There is no electricity or running water, but water jugs may be replenished at Park Ranger stations and visitors' facilities, and showers are available at the Toklat Ranger Station 12 miles from the East Fork cabin. Artists chosen must be comfortable in a wilderness setting.

Glogauer is an international meeting point for the visual arts. Its aim is to support and encourage contemporary artistic creation, research and debate. One of Glogauer's main activities is its Artist in Residence Programme. El Gouna Writers' Residency

El Gouna Writers' Residency was launched in February, 2010. El Gouna would host three sessions a year during the months of February, May and June. The length of each session is one month. During each session four to six writers will be inspired by El Gouna's picturesque setting and will be given an opportunity to interact with writers from different walks of life.

During their stay, the writers will also participate in a reading day at El Gouna's library, a branch of the renowned Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and will be asked to provide a report stating the development of their literary project. MASS MoCA / Cabinet Open call for a two-part Exhibition An Exchange with Sol LeWitt

The story of Sol LeWitt's exchanges with other artists is by now widely known. Though most artists engage in this process at one point or another, LeWitt seemed fully committed to it as an artistic code of conduct, a way of life.

Eva Hesse, Robert Mangold, Hanna Darboven, and Robert Ryman are just a few of LeWitt's celebrated contemporaries with whom the artist exchanged works. Such exchanges were not limited to well-known artists, however: LeWitt consistently traded works with admirers whom he did not know but who had nevertheless sent their work to him, as well as amateur artists with whom he interacted in his daily life. LeWitt's exchanges—he responded to every work he received by sending back one of his own—fostered an ongoing form of artistic communion and, in some cases, a source of support and patronage. The Sol LeWitt Private Collection retains all of the works he received, as well as a record of what he offered in return.

For LeWitt, the act of exchange seemed to be not only a personal gesture, but also an integral part of his conceptual practice. In addition to encouraging the circulation of artworks through a gift economy that challenged the art world's dominant economic model, LeWitt's exchanges with strangers have the same qualities of generosity, and risk, that characterized his work in general. This kind of exchange was designed to stage an encounter between two minds, outside the familiar confines of friendship.

If we consider the process of exchange as another of Sol LeWitt's instructional pieces, then the rational (or irrational) thing to do is to continue to exchange work and ideas, if only symbolically, with him.

Your gift to Sol LeWitt can take the form of an image, an object, a piece of music, or a film. Books, ephemera, and other non-perishable items (e.g. wine) are also welcome. Other ideas may be discussed with the curator.

2D contributions should be no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches;

3D contributions should be no larger than 12 x 12 x 12 inches.

All contributions will be exhibited at either Cabinet or MASS MoCA. The curator will notify you of the location of your contribution by 1 December 2010.

A publication documenting the contributions will accompany the shows and will be presented at the conclusion of the project to all participants.

FLACC is a workplace for visual artists and creates the conceptual, organisational and technical conditions for realising unique artist projects.

E very year, FLACC selects ten artists to set up a new project. In each annual selection, FLACC aims to strike a balance between national and international artists, between beginners and artists with experience, between autonomous art and/or research projects and artists that deal in more concrete terms with the historical, geographical or social context of the workplace.

FLACC has metal and woodworking workshops, a digital studio, and a foundry with a furnace and kilns for ceramics, bronze and glass applications, and an extensive workspace.

The staff is knowledgeable about the production possibilities of nearby workplaces and collaborates with those workplaces and with schools and companies to give the artists the best possible support and assistance.

The call is open for all visual artists. Due to the diversity of our workshops, the application is open for projects in various media and disciplines.

Projects with a notice of the specific geographical, cultural, social or historical situation of FLACC (or Genk/Belgium), challenging the notion of a 'workplace' or with the specific technical possibilities of FLACC are preferable. The work period is three-month full time in 2011 or around 90 days, divided in several smaller work periods. FLACC offers an accommodation, a workplace, covered travel expenses, a per diem as well as a small production budget.

The Consejo Superior de Deportes [CSD] (Sports Council) in collaboration with Idensitat [ID #6] announces a call for interdisciplinary projects promoting the relationship between sport and the social, cultural and creative areas.

We are witnessing the development of what might be considered as a "field" of social commitment in sports that did not exist until just a few years ago. This commitment takes on, as a main feature, topics of social exclusion as well as the integration of immigrant populations.

The increasing prominence of activities and sports projects directed at these sectors leads us to research experiences in what we might call " good practices " to build an archive as a resource for learning, debating, and to build relationships among sport, social interventions, and creative practices (art, design, architecture, etc.). We believe that sport interacting with these fields can support processes of social cohesion, especially when it helps to create places, or to strengthen already existing venues, where peer groups can meet and communicate. In this way, sport can become an interesting source of social capital and an element for the creation of different social networks (contacts, friends, friendship, prestige, etc.).

Within creative practices, sport is often treated as circumstantial or thematic, but some examine certain social dynamics as a basis for work regarding relationships and shared creativity. Sport enhances these kinds of relationships and connections. Sports activities usually facilitate contact and relationships between individuals and groups of different backgrounds without the protocols demanded in other types of activities. Bringing both aspects together, we believe, can help develop projects to stimulate social creativity and an exchange of values particular to every field of action in certain local contexts.

The aim of this call for projects is to identify existing work, to generate an archive of " good practices ", disseminate them, and to support the creation of new experiences which connect sport to other disciplines. The call is aimed at the wide range of organizers, creators and cultural agents who operate throughout Spain.

Types of Projects at which this call is aimed

1-Projects about physical activity and sports* promoted by organizations, associations, sports clubs, local councils, regional councils, autonomic governments mainly concerned with social inclusion as well as social intervention through sport in disadvantaged zones.

2-Creative projects* proceeding from different disciplines (artists, architects, designers, etc.) that organize or promote projects based on sporting subjects and with special orientation towards social questions.

3-Hybrid projects* arising from the relationship between creators and organizations, sports clubs, social educators, etc.; proposing collaborative work and concerning subjects of inclusion or social intervention through this relationship between creativity and sport.

Proposals can be submitted for the following awards:

1.Project bank

Call for projects in progress or already finished. The projects selected will be part of an archive or project bank with the aim to disseminate them, and make them accessible. All selected projects will receive an honorable mention by the Consejo Superior de Deportes and Idensitat. In addition three projects selected for their contribution of distinctive and innovating features will be awarded with 1.000 Euros.

2- Project laboratory

Call for unpublished projects in which sport is the main thread, or an important part in its methodology of intervention. These projects must provide answers to problems related to social inclusion in different urban contexts, raising questions, detecting conflicts, proposing strategies of negotiation or of participation through sport. Projects that can be realized in the medium-short term and sharing production through workshops, preferably in collaboration with local organizations. All selected projects will receive an honorable mention from the Consejo Superior de Deporte and some will be selected to be awarded a maximum of 8.000 Euros each toward their production in 2011. Proposals for both awards can refer to any Spanish city.

apexart Franchising - Resolving another boundary between art and business

Based on the idea of creating its own franchise, apexart has held two worldwide open calls for 400-word proposals asking participants why the franchise should come to their town and provide all of the support necessary to produce an exhibition.

As the art world adopts strategies from the world of business, cultural organizations have set up franchises around the globe. For the second year, apexart is joining this trend and setting up its own franchise in a new city. The Franchise competition is an opportunity for anyone from anywhere to create their own temporary apexart. For a four-week exhibition, the winner will be the director, curator and/or staff of your own apexart franchise with an $8,000 exhibition budget, a modest salary, and almost complete control. apexart provides the funding, along with the necessary guidance to make the curated exhibition happen. This includes an apexart brochure in an edition of 10,000 and its distribution around the world to more than 108 countries and a visit or two from us. The winning curator will also write an essay about the show. The Franchise is an opportunity to help bring an idea to fruition in a new place and to give someone an interesting opportunity.

The Franchise was conceived to explore a relationship between art and commerce and to enable an exhibition based on meritocratic consensus. To further extend the public interactive nature of this idea, we ask a large number of individuals to take part on a jury to score submissions from countries around the world.

We want your help! In order to make the Franchise as fair as possible, we invite up to 300 jurors to be responsible for a part of the process, reading about 25 proposals each. Sojourn Theater

When I saw Michael Rohd and Shannon Scrofano speak at PSU some months back, I fell into an instant love-hate relationship with them. A very fast-paced relationship, after such a brief, not very intimate encounter. I was intrigued by their bringing socially engaged artwork into the realm of theater/dance theater/performance theater/physical theater/performance art - it crossed all of those boundaries and more. I was annoyed at their presentation, however, for treating us, the audience, like we had never seen a theater project that went off stage to incorporate the audience. Plus, they had even more energy than I. Yikes. After a more intimate gathering after the lecture, however, I was fairly sold that I should check their work out.

"On the Table" is a multi-course piece about sense of place, belonging, inclusion and exclusion. When purchasing tickets, I had to choose if I'd like to start in Portland or Molalla. Where's Molalla?

Act 1: Our experience started in a church-turned-theater in NE Portland, just blocks from my house. We sat in an oval while the 'players' played their parts; of former Portland inhabitants, and of themselves. While playing themselves they were awkward and self conscious, making an argument for Portland's awesomeness, which I care to question. But we became accustomed to the ins and outs of the characters, real and imagined, and we then moved on to our anticipated bus trip to the country. I had some images of haystacks in my mind, as there were some scouting shots presented when they spoke of the piece during its development.

Act 2: On the bus we were given a performance-cheer by a new group of young performers. It was too loud to hear them, but I think we were asked to discuss our sense of "home" and "place" with our neighbors on the bus, which we did. That's a big one for me, having recently moved after a very long stint. We stopped at the Oregon City Amtrak station and witness a faux marriage, and were promptly invited to a wedding. We then were asked to turn on our phones, and many of us received phone calls from an unknown individuals, presumably those who started in Molalla, whom we couldn't hear because the old school bus was just too loud. Nice idea though.

Act 3: A high-perched parking lot in Oregon City dimly lit with warm candlelight, a groovy band playing, and Michael Rohd himself inviting us to think about what we were about to do. The players, integrated at our tables with assigned seating, brought up issues of potential difference and intolerance that one might have to deal with at a wedding, or at our table. What if there were a logger and an environmentalist sitting together? What if there were a vegan and a hunter? And so the list went on. We were asked to discuss these issues with our table. We were obviously set up for a potentially difficult situation here. We sat next to an old couple from Molalla, a middle aged couple from Portland, and a young twosome- not sure of their status, from Molalla. The player at our table facilitated our discussion while we ate a symbolic tasting menu, family style. I actively engaged my older Molalla neighbors, Mel and Melanie, who heard about the project at their local carpet store. They were used to going to see community theater fairly regularly. When our facilitator, I think his name was Joel, tried to engage us in conversation, it was the Portlanders that immediately responded and engaged. We all talked about tolerance and humility, and I used my family as an example. I brought up the struggle to simultaneously take a stance and be tolerant. Finally I asked the Molallans to chip in. The young guy at the other end of the table broke his silence. "I don't care what you think, frankly". "You do what you do and let me do what I do. That's why I live in the country without any neighbors, so I can live my life how I want." Mel piped in: "It's the American way". Joel or our other Portland neighbors suggested it was the Pioneer spirit. The divide between us was thick yet somehow light-spirited and friendly. Our facilitators publicly exclaimed our sentiments as we went back into theater mode for a moment. Then I was tapped on the back, asked by a man if my number was (510) ... . It was the man who had called earlier. He was a Molalla resident, a retired auto mechanic. We chatted about ourselves for a few minutes until his wife and I, along with the rest of the crowd, were led around the other side of the parking lot to witness a final dance way down below us. We clapped, said our goodbyes and got back on the bus.

I wasn't sure again. Had this been self conscious, overbearing, didactic art with some symbolic niceties or did something remarkable just happen?

I don't have the answer, but I have been thinking about it, and about my sense of home, and about the brief yet straightforward meeting we had with the residents of Molalla ever since... .

Key to the City

When Paul Ramirez Jonas visited PSU I was mildly intrigued, but throughout his description of his newest project, Key to the City, I was confused why anyone would make a key for something that wasn't already locked. My semi-anarchist-tending self just didn't get it. Many months later, while in NYC for the Smack Mellon show, Ariana encouraged me to go to the Key to the City Commons at Times Square. I was vaguely intrigued- more because Creative Time was hosting the project, less because I was interested. Joining us was Ariana's lovely friend Paloma.

We stood in a short line during a torrential rain storm, hot and steamy rain like we don't get out west. We were greeted by a nice young woman who turned out to be an art history PHD candidate at CUNY, studying with Claire Bishop. We were led to shelter and given instructions, then led to another tent where the three of us were indoctrinated with keys and passports. One had to give the passport and key to another, with written wishes. I indoctrinated Paloma with the spirit of New Pal-dom. Ariana indoctrinated me in the spirit of Making Things Happen. Paloma indoctrinated Ariana. Off we went. The ritual was delightful, and inspiring as it clearly touched thousands and thousands of people by its prime location. Paul had sent a letter to us after his visit asking many questions about the "public", including how many in a public was enough. Many thousands seem like a really successful amount to me.
We were also charmed by the design and layout of the passport. It is virtually a well-instructed invitation to explore parts of the city you might not have considered. There are locations in all five boroughs, and one is expected to find a variety of things behind the locked doors. Surprises, delights, flashbacks, and even pastries.

We went to Gleason's Gym in DUMBO as it was an obvious convenient location. Gleason's, we found out during our visit, is the oldest gym in NY. It smelled like man sweat and old basketball gyms from my childhood. The testosterone was thick. The floor squeaked and some guys were boxing in a ring. Others were practicing their left hooks on punching bags (I need one of those). There were a few really friendly guys who were interested in why we were there and added a few anecdotes about the place. We opened a locker in the back corner that held a pair of gloves and some other memorabilia. Not as magical as my experience and the next stop, Cabinet magazine, but still a new mind-opening experience.

Back in NY many weeks later , I decided to have a boroughs adventure. I went to the Queens Museum to see J. Morgan Puett's installation, and ate Indian food at the Jackson Diner on 74th & Roosevelt in Queens. I headed back on the F train to Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens, so I could visit Cabinet Magazine. I lived in Park Slope in 1987-88, so Carroll Gardens, a nearby neighborhood, brought back an eerie deja vu.

I found my way thanks to the handy map and directions in my Passport. I went around the building to a box in an alley. I unlocked the box with my big shiny key, and suddenly some old-timey circa 1920's song played, something about a bubble. There was a message printed inside to "look up". I did, and there above me flew big shiny bubbles, blowing in the wind. As long as the cabinet was open, the bubbles blew and the song accompanied it. There was also a small sign directing me to "not leave anything in the box". I guess they didn't want my old chewing gum.

There was something so remarkably delightful about that adventure and discovery. It made me feel ridiculous for not having been to Carroll Gardens in the year I had lived in Park Slope or the many times I have visited NY since. It got me out of my comfort zone and into discovering a random neighborhood in Brooklyn through a mundane journey. And the bubbles...

This long term collaboration was a little tricky. It was hard to foresee the final 'product' from afar: not only how the relationships would emerge with the sites of alternative pedagogy in DUMBO, our on-site collaborators, but also how the installation would look. It was also challenging to negotiate different working modes among our core group, especially as time closed in. The interesting result, though, was a project with multiple, complex visions that felt complete and flawlessly blended. I often think about music as the ultimate and easy collaboration model- one person generally couldn't make what the group could, so collaboration is the natural manner to complete the final goal. In music and other performance there is a certain magic that often happens with the group. With an art model, especially with a visual component such as an installation, there's a general history and understanding that one person could pull everything together, or at least one person would be credited for it.
Just one of us couldn't or wouldn't have had this final vision. It was worth the challenge.

I wonder if anyone has cable tv so they can watch the entertaining (laughable) show Work of Art. I discovered it while in NY as my bro does indeed have cable. Luckily Nao Bustamante is there to keep things in perspective. Berin Golanu wrote a great piece about it in ARThood:

Once you find a place of interest, GO TO THEIR WEBSITE! I can’t stress this enough- that’s where you find out what’s really going on, maybe.. Sometimes the research sites have outdated info.

Who are the other artists who have been there? Are they all, say, Belgian, even though it claims to be an international organization? What career stages are they compared to you? Go to the artists’ websites! Do they accept mostly social practice based artists or painters or sound artists or all? You will be at a disadvantage because you are American.

Do they have a rotating curatorial staff? Do you want to make an impression on a particular curator?

The nicer the weather/more beautiful the location, the more the residency will cost, usually…

Do they want you to interact with the public? Are you willing?

Will you get to network with the local Art Scene?

Are you the only artist living in a remote farmhouse in Finland in the winter? Is that ok?

Are you in a shared housing situation? Is that ok?

How does eating/food purchasing/cooking work? Are you required to be communal?

Do you have to leave a piece of art? Is that ok?

Can you do your project in the allotted time? Are you willing to be away from your family & friends for 6 months?

Can you bring your parter/children/pet?

This is one of the few cases where ‘paying to play’ is acceptable. Some of these places give you amazing admin support, or a nice AC apartment, or.. Check the economic status of the country and see how the cost fits in. I did a $400 Taipei residency and I bet it even covered my AC bill, whereas I got all the administrative support I could want. It was so cheap to be there it was totally worth it.

Others are straight up rip offs- look into it.

Make personal contact: introduce yourself and ask a question that can’t be answered on their site, but not ‘will you preview my work?’. Personal contact can make you memorable, and you can ask some of those questions above. Don't sound too needy, as the administrators may not want to work with you...

Follow directions!

Do multiple applications at once, because you will fail- get over it and try again. On average, I’d say, as emerging artists we get one in ten.

Get your package together, so you can have it ready to send in 30 minutes (so you can apply to 5 at a time, because you will be rejected.. but fear not! You will get some!)

1.Portfolio – a concise body of work – have around 20 available images
Image list, organized with titles, dates, media, information – last 2-3 years at most
Photograph/Photoshop/size/organize images in 2 sets: both 300 dpi and 72 dpi/ 600x800
Most places want digital files but some in Europe still go for the ‘book’, with photos, sketches, resource images, etc.- you can be really creative with those.
Video- is it Mac/PC compatible? NTSC or PAL? You should be prepared for both.
Music/writing/video samples- usually you are asked for 3-5
Each institution will want something different, so have the images ready to cut down to 10, or to email, etc.
2. C.V
List of exhibitions, projects, reviews, education, lectures, etc.
Be creative yet informative
3. Statement
Remember you may be dealing with foreign ESL folk- do not get too heady with your explanations. Be concise, clear, and creative. The Germans may respond to mentioning a German philosopher while the Taiwanese may relate more to quoting Confucius. Also, the curators/jury have to read a lot of these...
4. Project Outline- this will change package to package, but again, be clear
What are your goals (make 10 paintings, research igloo construction, write an opera, etc..)
How do they relate to the organization’s philosophy or the theme of the residency?
What is you work plan (week one.. week two…)
Good to mention cross cultural understanding/ambassadorship for foreign residencies
Again, potential foreign ESL curators- be clear & use simple language

What, if anything is the institution willing to pay for? Maybe their funding covers only travel, or only materials with receipts,..

Budgets: basically, identify expenses, itemize, and have your total equal what you're asking for. Usually you don't need a budget for a residency but sometimes you might.

On Collaboration

Collaboration can be hard!
Back at CESTA, the art center in Czech republic where I lived and worked for eight years, we hosted festivals of international, interdisciplinary collaborations. Every festival had a theme, and individuals or groups would apply to then be put into collaboration groups. We would choose team members from different countries and who worked in different media. Say, a German dancer with an Australian video team, or an American performance art troupe with an Estonian Free Jazz group (that was me, my first experience participating in such a collaboration).

Sometimes these collaborations worked splendidly. Sometimes long term collaborators were made. Sometimes there were fist fights. Literally.

There are many different types of collaborations, but I'll identify two models:

1) The pie-piece model, where each member delivers a predetermined, individual piece to fit in the pie.

2) The make-a-new-pie model, where group members scramble things up and invent a new recipe. A chemical change happens and the pie is a reinvented melding of the ingredients.

I find #2 to be a truly successful model for collaboration. In #1, rogue players caring for their individual slices of pie without considering the whole is a way to work, but does not make collaboration meaningful. In #2, every individual contributes to the whole while learning from each other, adapting her/his methods, letting go of egos, and making a new project.

Like I said, it ain't easy, but I'm curious what you think.

Incorporating Food

Today in History of Art & Social Practice we continued our dialogue via a mock trial, deciding who fit (or didn't) into the canon based on presented 'evidence' by students.
Lief Hedendal came up as he was a presenter at Open Engagement. He makes locally-sourced meals as his practice. He reaches out to local farmers and creates relationships. He claims it.
The majority of the class voted him out of the canon. I was a little bit shocked. He who practices the social, but reflects real life. What's the problem?
Would Jaime Oliver fit into the canon? He by no means claims to be an artist, let alone a socially engaged one, yet he practices socially engaged food activism better than anyone I know. Can we adopt him?
Just thinking..
So Nicole Penoncello and I are launching Your Garden Cookbook, which will offer custom cookbook-making services for Portland gardens. Does this cut the bill?

Swinehart, Nicole, Jillian, Derek and I had a brainstorm & beer session at the Candlelight yesterday afternoon that resulted in these lists. Everyone is welcome to do some research so when the discussion does arise, we can enter it informed.

Trips:
Mexico City: Cross-culture, galleries, museums
LA: Museums, galleries, the counterpart to NY
San Francisco: Has become a a diverse art scene and excellent museums. We could work it out to go for First Thursday (SF) and First Friday (Oakland), plus visit San Jose, Napa, etc.
London: Expensive, but fab..
Montreal: Feels like Europe, interesting snowstorms, tons of artist run spaces
Vancouver: Artist run spaces, West Coast Photography

Detroit: No one will go for this, but there are tons of interesting DIY projects going on, mostly involved with reclaiming the city

Minneapolis: Walker, galleries

Boston & Mass Moca: Also doubtful, but Mass Moca has been cited as a favorite among us

Recipes for May 10

Spanikopita
Sautee onions till soft
Add garlic, well-washed spinach, S & P
Puree with plenty of feta
Layer sheets of filo with brushed olive oil or melted butter
Score piece sizes/shapes well, as it is a pain to cut when baked
Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes

Red Lentil Soup
Another variation- add tomatoes for a savory, acidic edge
Sautee onions, carrots and celery (mire poix) and garlic til soft and releasing juices
Add stock or water, and a large can of chopped tomatoes, soy sauce, a dash of molasses, S & P
Add red lentils and cook till soft, adjusting seasoning as needed

Couscous
You know this one- the more yum yums (fruits, nuts, orange zest, etc.) inside, the better

Black Bean Hummus
Soak beans overnight, drain
Cook beans till soft, about 1-11/2 hours
Drain most of the liquid, reserve
Puree with a clove of fresh garlic, lemon juice, tahini, smoked paprika, olive oil and S & P
Garnish with smoked paprika and cilantro or parsley

Recipes for May 3

Chana Masala
Soak chick peas overnight in plenty of water, or, if just making a small amount, use canned: it's 10x faster, almost as cheap, and you won't burn a pan multitasking waiting for those darn little ones to cook
Drain and cook, if not following above directions, in fresh water, for at least an hour
Puree 1 onion, a huge piece of peeled ginger, and garlic
Chop another onion
Puree a large can of tomatoes
Sautee chopped onion, and add the following whole spices: black cardamom, cloves, peppercorns, cumin
When onions are browned, add pureed onions, ground coriander, tumeric, salt and chili
When oil rises to surface, add tomatoes
Add cooked, drained chick peas and let flavors meld
Sprinkle with Garam Masala before serving

Curried Potatoes
Boil potatoes in a large pot of cold, lightly salted water
Drain well and add to a sautee pan with butter or oil, cumin and mustard seeds, S & P
Sautee to soak up fat and add coconut milk and curry powder
Continue to cook on low-med until coconut milk is somewhat soaked up

Raita
Toss Yogurt, cucumbers, green onions, radishes, and chopped mint together with cumin, S & P and a dash of sugar to cut the yogurt's tartness
You could add or subtract a variety of fruits or vegetables or spices to change the flavors

Fruit Chutney
Boil any variety of fresh and dried fruits, with equal parts vinegar and sugar, plus ginger, garlic and spices; in this case I used peeled apples and oranges, figs, apricots and mint
When the mixture is thickened, it is done-some varieties might benefit from a light puree

New York

Thanks to everyone who made our NY trip possible! We had an extraordinary visit with Mark Dion's tour of the Natural History Museum, then a trip up to Columbia and to the MFA studios, where they treated us to pizza and beer and a good time. They were remarkably unlike Portlanders: Fashionable hair, foreign accents, tight jeans, no beards.

Next day, some of us went to our Smack mellon meeting, then off to meet the others at Artists Space where we were warmly welcomed, then to the Drawing Center for another nice presentation, and Deitch for paintings in a formerly unseen color scheme. The Whitney Biennial was next- mediocre at best, but a few works really stepped out, like Alex Hubbard's video.

Many of us went to see the fabulous Miwon Kwon speak about her new curatorial project about Earth works. Claire Bishop was in the audience and we felt a little extra shiver of excitement. Miwon Kwon was warm, smart, honest and extremely likable.

Saturday, a tour of Flux Factory with Chen Tamir in Queens, PS1's performance show (comprehensive but squished and poorly "hung"), and Chelsea, where miraculously we saw a number of good shows in 1 block. Lucky day: Catherine Opie, Janet Cardiff, Barbara Kruger and more (all my cards are in the library so I can't name them all).

A visit with Dexter Sinister followed, then dumplings in Chinatown.

Sunday was a free day so I visited the lovely Dan Walsh and checked out his new book projects before eating Korean brunch. Our many-hour late flight allowed for funny and irritating interactions at the airport with a backdrop of teen a cappella.

Chili
Roasted potatoes
Cilantro-lime aioli

I think you've heard about chili- This time, I didn't use any pumpkin, and I used 2 kinds of beans, and a lot of beer.
Roasted potatoes- surely I've told you about these...olive oil, herbs, sea salt, high temp oven, an hour, voila

Cilantro Lime Aioli
If you are using a cuisinart, use a whole egg. If making by hand, use just the yolk.
Take a spoonful of mustard, a room-temp egg, a tbsp of lime juice, salt, and a 1/4 cup olive oil and whirl
As you are whisking or whirling, slowly add a stream of olive oil until the mixture starts to thicken. Once thick, add chopped cilantro and whirl some more.

Stuffed Roasted Red Peppers with CousCous
Roast some peppers or use jarred ones in winter- they taste rather good and are a heck of a lot less messy than making your own...just saying
To roast, char whole peppers in the broiler, over a grill or over/under any live flame, turning regularly- Let it burn & blacken
Put in a paper bag, sitting in a bowl to absorb yummy juices and wait patiently til they cool a bit
Peel skins with your hands- it should be easy-leaving some charred bits
Open and scoop out seeds
Toss measured couscous with olive oil, lemon zest, dried fruits and nuts, S & P, and any spices you want
Use your fingers to coat each grain with the oil- this will prevent clumping
Pour equal amount of boiled water, all at once, on couscous and cover for 5 minutes
Adjust flavors of couscous and scoop some into each whole pepper after having made an opening in it
Snuggle stuffed peppers in a roasting pan
Serve cold with olive oil and lemon juice drizzled on top or put in the oven for 45 minutes with some feta or goat cheese crumbled on top

Red Lentil Soup
Sautee onions, carrotts, celery chopped in small cubes on low heat til soft
Add fewer lentils than you think, along with water or stock, soy sauce, S & P
Cook for 20 minutes or til lentils are soft and expanded
Puree if you can
Adjust seasoning and cook a little longer, covered, with a Bay leaf

Hummus
Boil chick peas til cooked or use canned ones for small batches
Mash with garlic, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, using reserved cooking liquid or stock or water to liquefy the consistency if you like it runnier
Voila!

Cucumber Yogurt Salad
Grate and drain two English cucumbers (they are drier and less seedy)
Mix with a tub of yogurt, S & P, a dash or two of cumin, and mint or parsley
Voila!

Impress Your Friends Bread
Combine 2 c white flour, 1 c wheat flour, 1/2 tsp yeast, 1-1/2 tsp salt, and 1-1/3 cups of cool water
Stir well and cover
Let sit for 12-18 hours or until bubbling
Scrape out onto a floured board
Make a round and put in a cornmeal-dusted clean kitchen towel
Let sit in the towel, in a bowl, in a warmish place for an hour or two
Preheat oven to 475, heating a cast iron pan or pizza stone in it
Carefully transfer risen loaf onto hot pan/stone
Bake for about a half hour or til lightly browned
Yummy and easy!

Butternut Squash Gratin
Toss a few squashes (pumpkins would work too) into the oven at 350 till soft enough to cut without breaking your arm off
Meanwhile make sauce (see below)
Slice squash into 1 inch wedges and peel, discarding seeds and fibrous mess
Sautee in olive oil and fresh sage, S & P until nicely browned
Sautee or steam fresh chard with onions and garlic
Layer sauce,squash, chard and grated parmesan/mozarella
Bake at 350, loosely covered, for about 45 minutes
Serve with fresh parsley sprinkled on top

Tomato Sauce
It's still winter, so use canned tomatoes- Muir Glen organic canned tomatoes are the most flavorful in my opinion (pardon the product placement)
Sautee plenty of onions and garlic
Add canned tomatoes, sage from the squash sautee session, basil, parsley, a dash of molasses, a dash of sugar, salt, pepper and red chili flakes
Simmer for a while, getting the flavors how you want them, then puree lightly, depending on how chunky or smooth you like it- for this recipe smooth is better
Experiment! It's just tomato sauce..explore what different herbs, chilis, more or less sweet or savory- it's easy to make this reflect you

Salad

We had a good review session last week and I appreciate all of your comments about the presentation. It's funny because I have the same major criticisms as you and I'd like to address them: Yes, my videos look like doodoo. It has been a problem mostly due to usb cable disintegration into my low-power,low-memory aging (pc)computer. Not to mention not having a person to really "do video"- that would be helpful too. I am awaiting a financial aid boost to address the computer problem. If anyone wants to volunteer to film me at some point, I'll take it.
Secondly, I didn't back up the jingles. I have been so focused on backing up the cheers that I have let the jingles fall free of explanation. I will have you a well-considered answer by our next review. It will all make sense to all of us.

Meeting the PSU cheerleaders

The Portland State Cheerleaders generously invited me into one of their practices last night to discuss Dial-a-Cheer, the PomPom People, their notions of the role of the Cheerleader, stereotypes in the media, positivity, cynicism and art.

One thing that has really changed since my stint as a cheerleader is that they are ATHLETES. or as they put it "Halfletes" - all the athleticism, half the respect. They are gymnasts, dancers and weightlifters. They urge the crowd on. They get frustrated by overwhelming cynicism too. They know stereotypes are just that. They recognize their choreographer as an artist.

Tomorrow I have a rendezvous to begin our collaboration- it may be one day or many, but I am excited to start to break down the barrier between Cheerleading and Art, and see what can happen with the new visual and emotional impact of many (kick ass) PomPom peeps in contrast to my lone voice.

Recipes for February 22

Lentil Soup with Preserved Lemons
Sautee finely chopped onions, garlic, ginger, carrots, celery and S & P on low til onions are tender
Add rinsed lentils- they will expand a lot so keep that in mind when measuring
Add plenty of water or stock, a can of tomato paste, a few bay leaves and some soy sauce
Simmer, covered, for about an hour
Add finely chopped preserved lemons and some red chili flakes, adjust S & P
Simmer a little longer til flavors meld
*You can add the heel of your favorite cheese during the cooking process for an earthy addition

Preserved Lemons
Don't start this project without having some canning jars- clean them with boiling water- they won't break, but if you are scared, pour the water over a big steel spoon
Bring a salt bath to a boil- 3 Tbsp of salt for every lemon, a cup+ of water for every two lemons
Blanch whole, scored lemons (slice into skin lengthwise every inch or so
While cooking, add cinnamon stick, cloves, peppercorns, star anise and bay leaves to the cleaned jars
Take lemons out of the liquid with tongs and place in jars
Pour cooking liquid over top until completely covered
Close jars and either sterilize like a good person should or be lazy like me and seal & pop in the fridge when cool enough to touch
Make sure to turn the jar upside down for a while every day - the lemons will be ready to eat in a week
Use the chopped skins for a burst of flavor and texture or squeeze the center pulp for salad dressings

Bulgar Salad with apples, feta and mint
Cook bulgar wheat like you would rice- bring to a boil with a 1-1 ration of water or stock, then simmer, covered on low
Meanwhile, chop the flavors: plenty of mint, parsley, roasted peppers if you have them, apples, a clove of garlic (not too much) and lemon zest
When bulgar is done and cooled, add the flavors, S & P, olive oil and lemon juice
Add chopped feta at the end and toss with dressing
